Each year, Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) helps give a second chance to more than 10,000 abandoned, abused and homeless pets. Before they can be placed in new homes, most of the cats, dogs and other animals need vaccinations and essential medical care. With no in-house veterinary care, SCRAPS staff spend several hours a day driving sick or injured animals to outside veterinarians.
A Community Strategies grant from Innovia Foundation was awarded to the SCRAPS Hope Foundation to help the animal shelter open an in-house veterinary clinic. In addition to serving the animals in SCRAPS’ care, the clinic will eventually become a resource for the community, providing low-cost preventative care to pet owners who can’t afford vaccinations and other basic medical needs.
“Our goals are to first increase the speed and care of the animals that are impounded here at SCRAPS with our own clinic, and secondly provide the community with a low-cost resource for preventive care of owned and non-owned animals,” said Janet Dixon of SCRAPS Hope Foundation.
