Reflections of Sacrifice

At 87 years old, retired Air Force veteran Dale pauses before the memorial of Army Special Forces medic Wyatt Goldsmith, killed in action (KIA) in Afghanistan. Reflected in his sunglasses is a young man from our community who gave his life in service to our nation. Dale was five years old when his own father was killed during World War II. He grew up with only limited memories of the man he never truly had the chance to know. Decades later, Dale answered his own call to serve, completing a career in the U.S. Air Force that included multiple overseas tours. During an earlier deployment to Afghanistan, Wyatt received the Bronze Star Medal with 'V' Device and Purple Heart, and was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. As America reflects on 250 years, this image honors three generations whose service took different paths, yet each reflected a willingness to answer a noble calling and a commitment to something greater than themselves. Their stories remind us that the strength of a community is found not only in those who serve, but also in those who choose to remember."

This photo was taken during their dress rehearsal for their 2025 performance at the Myrtle Woldson Theater. This moment captures a mix of old and new, classical and modern, distant and local, original and interpretive, movement and stillness, revealing so many foundational paradoxes that America seems to balance and embody somehow — all at once."

Monday Night Dinners

I moved to Coeur d'Alene and didn't know a single person. So I started walking around and just inviting strangers to have dinner in my backyard. No politics. No business. No networking. No agenda other than old fashioned connection. Eleven people came to the first one and now, we have thousands of people that come to them each year now — still in my small backyard."

Playing for More Than a Win

HUB Sports Center hosts the Battle of the Nations, a Native basketball tournament that brings together teams representing more than 60 tribes from across the United States. Unlike most tournaments, athletes compete alongside members of their own tribal communities, creating a powerful connection between sport, culture, and identity. This image captures more than a contested shot at the basket. It reflects generations of pride, tradition, and community gathered under one roof. At the HUB, athletics become a bridge that strengthens relationships, celebrates heritage, and creates lasting memories. Events like Battle of the Nations demonstrate the heart of our mission: bringing people together through sports, building community, and creating a place where everyone belongs.

I See You Too

I had only seen this species twice in my life before this day. Earlier, my camera seized when I had a photo opportunity and I was so discouraged that I missed my shot. Then this little guy flew into our camp when I had resigned myself to not seeing one again. It was a reminder that sometimes blessings come when we quit trying so hard to make them happen."

Every generation has its version of summer, but some moments never change running through a sprinkler on a warm afternoon, laughing until you're soaked, and discovering joy in the simplest things. As America reflects on 250 years, this image celebrates the everyday experiences that become our fondest memories and remind us that hope for the future begins with the freedom to simply be a child."

This Is Why We Do It

No program description captures it better than this moment does. Two generations, side by side, discovering what a community built when it decided to invest in its people. Coming Together to Save Kiki

Kiki was lethargic and clearly in pain. After an initial exam with a local veterinarian, it was determined that she urgently needed surgery to remove a bladder stone. Unfortunately, the cost of the procedure was more than her family could afford, so they reached out to Better Together Animal Alliance's Helpline in hopes that help might be available. Around the same time, local veterinarian Dr. Sierra Temple was preparing to volunteer for a day of surgery at BTAA. When she learned about Kiki's situation, she generously offered to perform the procedure. Thanks to Dr. Temple's donated time and the incredible support of our donors, the bladder stone was successfully removed bringing much-needed relief to Kiki and peace of mind to the family who loves her."
