Laurie Vessey Fund
for Cleft Lip and Palate

How It Started

Established in 2018, The Laurie Vessey Fund for Cleft Lip and Palate was started as a dedication to Laurie Vessey who spent over 25 years serving her community and making the lives of families affected by clefts a little easier. Three moms who each have a child with a cleft who were patients of Laurie, came together and decided to honor Laurie and her years of service by creating a fund that would help future families in financial need with their cleft journey. The result being the Laurie Vessey Fund for Cleft Lip and Palate.

Families find out about their child’s cleft at a routine anatomy scan, or at birth. Either way the news comes as a devastating shock. The journey for a cleft affected child includes many medical, social, and emotional hurdles that are impactful far beyond initial surgeries. For the families, that also includes many financial hardships, including medical and dental bills, travel expenses, food/speech therapies, among others. Laurie Vessey provided support in any way she could to make challenging times less strenuous. The Laurie Vessey Fund for Cleft Lip & Palate is paying it forward and helping the cleft community that Laurie cared for so beautifully.

Laurie Vessey's Story

Laurie Vessey, a graduate from WSU with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, had a drive to work with babies and their new parents. Her career started in the NICUs of Washington and California. After 10 years of caring for newborns, Laurie decided to take a break from work and spend her time with her own children at home. During her time away from work she came across an employment want ad for a Cleft Lip and Palate Nurse Coordinator. The job description required the applicant to be a nurse with a four year degree, have a work history with the NICU, and experience with care coordination/case management. Laurie fit the bill with her experience, but it was the evenings and weekends off that encouraged Laurie to apply for the position.

The Mission

The Laurie Vessey Fund for Cleft Lip and Palate is dedicated to local families who need financial assistance with expenses associated with the cleft lip and palate. The aid assists with surgeries, hospital stays, dental appliances, and even travel expenses. Our goal is to ease the financial burden on families and refocus their time and energy on providing care and support to their loved ones.
