Innovia Foundation Launches Crisis Relief Fund Following Tragic Canfield Mountain Shooting

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho, June 30, 2025 — In response to the devastating ambush that claimed the lives of two firefighters and seriously injured a third on Canfield Mountain, Innovia Foundation has established the Kootenai County/Canfield Mountain Crisis Relief Fund to support the victims’ families and survivors in their recovery and healing.

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 29, while answering the call of duty, firefighters from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue were senselessly targeted and gunned down in an unprovoked attack. A third firefighter remains hospitalized in stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery. Authorities later located the suspected shooter deceased near the scene of the fire, which investigators believe he deliberately set as part of the ambush.

“This was a deliberate, calculated assault on the very people who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe,” said Shelly O’Quinn, CEO of Innovia Foundation. “Today, we mourn with our community — and tomorrow, we begin the long, necessary work of healing. The Kootenai County/Canfield Mountain Crisis Relief Fund exists to support the families of the fallen, care for the injured, and help our region come together with strength and compassion.”

Innovia Foundation is seeding the fund with an initial gift of $10,000.  All funds raised will support:

  • Families of the fallen firefighters
  • The firefighter critically injured in the line of duty
  • Local first responder units impacted by the tragedy
  • Mental health resources

Innovia Foundation encourages individuals, businesses, and community organizations across North Idaho and the Inland Northwest to give generously. 100% of donations will go directly to those impacted by this tragic event. The Foundation will work with the Red and Blue Foundation, public safety partners and other charitable efforts to ensure funds are distributed efficiently and transparently.

“This tragic event does not define us as a Coeur d’Alene community,” said Ryan Nipp, Innovia Foundation Board President and Partner, Parkwood Business Properties. “What truly defines us is our compassion and support for one another. In difficult times like these, I know our community will come together to help and uplift those affected.”
