The Upriver Youth Leadership Council (UYLC) serves Kamiah and Kooskia through community supported programs that encourage youth and adults to belong to something positive.
A recent grant from Innovia bolstered the nonprofit’s Community Garden program, which invites youth and community members of all ages to grow, harvest and cook produce to address food instability in the community. With the purchase of raised beds and gardening tools, students are harvesting their first crop of flowers and vegetables. At the new UYLC Teen Center kitchen, students are learning how to prepare nutritious meals and snacks using produce from the garden.
“It is our hope that the UYLC Community Garden will alleviate hunger in our community. It will be a place where all community members feel welcome.”
Sharlene Johnson, Executive Director of UYLC
