Marvin Soehren (1932 - 2024), A Lasting Legacy of Generosity and Leadership

Marvin Soehren, a dearly beloved member of the Innovia Foundation family, will be remembered as a steadfast supporter of the community foundation from its conception. While working with Old National Bank, known today as U.S. Bank, Marvin participated in the ideation and research that sparked the initial concept of a community foundation to serve our region. In 1974, he was one of 23 who signed the Articles of Incorporation establishing the Foundation, laying the groundwork for a lasting legacy.

Marvin’s involvement with Innovia Foundation did not diminish following that inaugural day 50 years ago. Nearly 20 years later, a Spring 1992 newsletter refers to him as “one of the Foundation’s greatest resources,” and he was photographed alongside Innovia’s student fellows just a few short years ago. Marvin held multiple influential positions in the organization, serving four terms on the Board of Directors and acting as Board President from 1985-1986. He remained a member of Innovia’s investment committee well into his 80’s.

Marvin instilled in his sons, Larry and Craig, his profound passion for the Foundation. Inspired by their father’s immense gratification from his involvement with the community foundation, Larry has served as a volunteer, while Craig has served on the Board of Directors, acting as Board President from 1992-1994, and as Distribution Committee Chairman. In 1992, Marvin shared that his family had “gained an enormous amount of satisfaction from the service” they had “given to Spokane through the Foundation.”

Connie Emry, one of the foundation’s earliest employees, fondly recounts Marvin’s conscientious spirit of service and noted his persistent pride in the growth of the community foundation, now known as Innovia. The Foundation’s 50th Anniversary this year has prompted many moments of grateful reflection on the organization’s history and the individuals who have contributed to its success. It is overwhelmingly evident that Marvin made a remarkable impact. He will be deeply missed, but his memory and legacy will forever be cherished.
