Phil Snowdon, a beloved educator who died of cancer in 2007, will continue to shape generations of young lives through the Phil Snowdon Scholarship. The scholarship was established in his honor by his wife, Suzanne, at Northeast Washington Education Council (NEWEC).
The fund provides annual distributions to NEWEC to award a Phil Snowdon Scholarship each year to a graduating senior from Cheney High School aspiring to advance the health, education or welfare of children.
Phil, a former teacher, school principal and Cheney School District Superintendent, served more than 32 years in public education. He was widely respected for his dedicated leadership and commitment to improving student learning.
“The miracle of student learning, in small increments and large leaps, amazes me as much today as it did in my first classroom in 1971,” Phil said upon his retirement in 2003. “Public education works: in our community, our state and our nation.”
